“Mune: Legend of the Guardian of the Moon,” a fantasy animation masterpiece from France, one of the world’s leading animation countries, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, and will be available for digital distribution and DVD rental.
To commemorate the release of the film on Blu-ray and DVD, digital distribution, and DVD rental on November 16, 2022 (Wednesday), an interview with the directors talking about their influences from Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Hosoda, as well as a preview of the film, have been released.
“Mune: Legend of the Guardian of the Moon” is an adventure story of courage and growth of Mune, who is chosen as the “Guardian of the Moon,” in a mysterious world where the sun and the moon exist at the same time, and faces difficulties together with his friends.
The film was nominated for the Crystal Award (Grand Prix) at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the premier animation film festival, and won the Award of Excellence at the Tokyo Animation Awards Festival (TAAF 2015).
The film was directed by Alexandre Heboyan, a writer and director who made his debut as an animator in “Azul and Asmar” by Michel Oslo, a leading French animation film director, and writer and director who specializes in adventure, comedy and action films Benoit Philippon.
The two say they were greatly influenced by Japanese animation, especially the works of Hayao Miyazaki, and they have gathered together an elite staff of animators, including some who are also active in Hollywood, to create a fantasy animation that is a perfect fusion of 3D and 2D animation.
Director Alexandre Heboyan says he is impressed by the unique expression of the story, as if told from the characters’ point of view, and that he is inspired by Japanese animation in many ways.
He was particularly influenced by Miyazaki’s works, and “I referred to them many times in scenes where I wanted to give a sense of spectacle, such as the scene where they find the temple of the moon and the sun.
He also referred to Hosoda’s work in the way he expressed the characters, such as how “the characters are always full of life.” He also said that he referred to “Wolf Children” (2012) for the design and facial expressions of Grim, the heroine of this film.
Director/Screenwriter Benoit Philippon is so influenced by Miyazaki’s work that he mentions the word “Miyazaki” several times a day, and further says that he is “fascinated and amazed by the work, even when the characters and situations are incredibly rich and depict cultures that French people cannot understand. At the same time, he exclaimed, “There are one or two great ideas in cinema, but Miyazaki’s work has more than 50.
He recalls that he was conscious of Miyazaki’s work and made sure to include a lot of information in each scene, art, graphics, etc.
“The Legend of Mune, Guardian of the Moon” will finally be released on Blu-ray and DVD on Wednesday, November 16, and is also available for digital distribution and DVD rental.
Let’s enjoy this film, which has created a huge buzz both in Japan and abroad, on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital distribution!
