Masako Nozawa, when she played Dragon Ball Son Gohan for the first time, “there was no name in the script” – an interesting episode.

The long-awaited Dragon Ball Super Super Hero film will be released in theatres on 11 June.

It is the 21st film in the series, and the original author Akira Toriyama was fully involved in the creation of the film, which is billed as “the birth of Akira Toriyama’s all-out, super battle action!

This time, too, the protagonist Son Goku is played by the same character, Son Goku.

In this film, Nozawa Masako plays three roles, including the main character Son Goku, his son Son Gohan, and Son Goten, but when Son Gohan first appeared in the TV series, she says she was “very curious to see who would play Gohan” and did not know she would be playing two roles until just before.

This time, Gohan plays a major role with his master Piccolo.

We asked him about episodes from that time and his thoughts on the latest film, together with Toshio Furukawa, who plays Piccolo.

–The film’s release was postponed a little this time, but we’re happy to hear that it’s going to be released without a hitch.

Masako Nozawa: It’s sad that it’s really been delayed a bit, and it’s something that can’t be helped. People say, “Why is this happening at a time like this?”, but I say, “Oh, this was a good thing in reverse. For all the films. I feel like it’s going to turn out in a good way.

Toshio Furukawa: I agree. I remember my mother used to tell me that even if I had a bad day, I should think of it as just a process of arriving at something good. In that sense, as Mako-san (Masako Nozawa) just said, I think it will turn out to be a good thing.

–The latest film also makes a big show of having the highest visual quality.

Masako Nozawa: When I record a scene, I get into the picture. I naturally get myself involved and become Gohan.

Toshio Furukawa: You have an intuitive nature, don’t you Mako? Even when it comes to shouting, we have to prepare our calls in advance or we don’t get them. Mako is intuitive and a genius. I write in the script that I’m going to say “haha” for this cut, and “gwah! I write it down in the script. But actually, I don’t have time to look at it.

–This time, too, you play three roles – Son Goku, Son Gohan, and Son Goten. I’m sure it’s tough to separate the different roles each time.

Masako Nozawa: When I look at the picture, I naturally go with the voice that came out the first time.

Toshio Furukawa: When I see that, I wonder how they can do it. (I don’t know how they can do that, because they do it all by themselves. If the lines don’t overlap, they can do a dialogue. I used to imitate him and wonder how he could do that. There were times when I was speaking as Goku and times when I was speaking as Gohan, and I practiced things like “Dad! (I practiced it.)

Masako Nozawa: You can do it too, Mr. Furukawa (laughs).

Toshio Furukawa: I can do it if I do it alone, but I do the conversation with both father and son at the same time. No ordinary person can do that. You have to record only one of them, and then record another role.

Masako Nozawa: At first, when Gohan came out, I was really interested in who would play Gohan. I went to the director and asked, “Who is going to play Gohan?” and he said, “It’s written in the script. But I couldn’t find it, so I said, “No, it’s not written in the script”, but he said, “It should be written in the script”. I said, “My script doesn’t say this,” but when I looked closer, I saw that right in the middle of the words “Son Goku” and “Son Gohan”, or a little closer to Goku, it said “Masako Nozawa”. I naturally thought that it was just a little bit off Goku’s side and not Gohan’s. So I was surprised at the two roles (laughs). That’s why I was surprised to see him in two roles (laughs).

–Lastly, the previous film was also a worldwide hit. What do you think is the reason why the Dragon Ball series is widely accepted around the world, from adults to children?

Masako Nozawa: What resonates with children is the hero. Goku is strong and helps. Everyone has that in them, but there are times when a friend of yours is being beaten up and you think, “He looks so strong, I can’t help him…”. But Goku goes straight to the rescue, and I think that’s what made him popular. He is a hero to everyone. He’s a bit of a screw-up, very much so. He loves food and eats like a fiend all year round. But he’s a hero. Normally I wouldn’t be a hero. Piccolo is cooler and much more of a hero (laughs). Goku is like, “Hmm?” (laughs).
